Guangdong Medical University, abbreviated as GDMU, is a provincial key – construction university in Guangdong. It has a long and remarkable history.
The university was founded in 1958 as the Zhanjiang Branch of Sun Yat – sen Medical College. In 1964, it was upgraded to a five – year – system medical undergraduate institution and renamed Zhanjiang Medical College. In 1992, it was renamed Guangdong Medical College, and finally in 2016, it became Guangdong Medical University.
It has two campuses: the Zhanjiang Campus and the Dongguan Campus. The Zhanjiang Campus is located in the seaport city of Zhanjiang, while the Dongguan Campus, which started admitting students in 2003, is situated in the scenic Songshan Lake Science and Technology and Industry Park in southern Dongguan. The two campuses cover a total area of nearly 2900 mu, providing a spacious and beautiful learning environment.
Guangdong Medical University offers a wide variety of academic programs. There are 36 undergraduate majors available for enrollment, covering seven major disciplines such as medicine, science, engineering, literature, economics, management, and law. At the postgraduate level, it has 1 first – level discipline for doctoral degree authorization, 7 first – level disciplines for master’s degree authorization, and 10 master’s professional degree authorization points. Among its disciplines, 6, including clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, biology and biochemistry, have entered the top 1% of the global ESI rankings, with clinical medicine even ranking among the top 3‰ globally.
The faculty here is outstanding. There are 1932 faculty members in total, among which 1455 are full – time teachers. 764 of them hold senior titles, accounting for 52.51%. The proportion of full – time teachers with a doctorate degree at the school’s main campus reaches 56.35%. There are 1490 graduate supervisors (including those from off – campus bases), with 94 doctoral supervisors and 1396 master’s supervisors. The university also has a high – level talent team led by many well – known scholars, such as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, national outstanding youth, and Pearl River scholars.
The university also attaches great importance to scientific research. It is one of the relying units of the Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory (Zhanjiang). It has established close industry – university – research cooperation relationships with scientific and technological innovation “highlands” like the China Spallation Neutron Source, Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory, and Huawei. It has 1 post – doctoral research mobile station, 3 post – doctoral research workstations, 10 provincial – level key laboratories, engineering technology research centers, and new research and development institutions, as well as 35 municipal – level key laboratories. Since the “13th Five – Year Plan”, it has obtained 295 national scientific research projects, 286 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The faculty and students have published 2800 SCI/EI – indexed papers as first – authors or corresponding authors, published 260 academic works, obtained 591 national patent authorizations, and won 1 second – prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and 13 provincial and ministerial – level scientific and technological achievement awards.
In terms of international exchange, the university has carried out various exchanges and cooperation with more than 50 universities and research institutes in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and regions like Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. It has joined several international educational alliances, such as the China – Russia Medical University Alliance and the “Belt and Road” Tropical Medicine Alliance. It started enrolling students from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan in 2010 and international students at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels in 2019.
Over the past 60 – odd years since its establishment, Guangdong Medical University has cultivated and transported more than 200,000 medical talents for the country and local areas.
